Chapter 33

Nate stood at the office window, staring out at the sea of tents covering the challenge field. Thankful to be alone for a bit, he pressed his right palm on the window frame, his thumb drumming against the wood. Magnus followed him like a puppy, but that wasn’t what concerned him at the moment. Forty-one new wolves. Forty-two, counting Brenner. As crowded as they already were, he didn’t know what to do. None of the other close ranches were for sale, and the one he recently purchased was wholly given to support the new were trade school and the first hospital ever built for were.

Koreth circled in his mind and settled as if to sleep. Maybe we should split them up among the packs.

Blinking, Nate considered Koreth’s suggestion. Weston Blake’s pack in Wyoming could use more men to help reopen the mines the pack owned. After an avalanche killed the alpha and most of the men in the pack, the mine had been temporarily closed. Nate offered the alpha position to Blake to prevent his challenge against Terrell for the position of alpha of the Colorado pack. For a moment, Nate wondered how Weston was coming along.

Terrell might be able to take a few, too. Koreth raised a sleepy eye and gave Nate a wolfy grin.

“That’s true since he lost so many during the leadership transfer.” Blake, his two sons, and their families, went to Wyoming. Three other wolves died in a forbidden challenge to take over the pack. Nate sighed and wiped his face with his left hand. “Maybe Eli could take some, too. I might be able to find room here for ten or so.”

A slight scuff against the carpet pulled Nate’s attention to the office door. Gloria leaned against the door jam, a smirk on her lips. “Still talking to yourself, Nate?”

Nate chuckled and raised an eyebrow. “Sometimes. Need something?”

“I have a question for you.”

Sitting at the desk, Nate motioned for her to take a visitor’s chair. “What’s up?”

“When Peyton, uh, when Peyton bites me . . ..”

“Concerned it won’t take?”

“Being were isn’t my ideal life, but if it’s what I need to do to be with Peyton, I will. I just . . . I don’t want to be like that guy you took to the hospital.”

“It’s a valid concern.” Nate leaned forward, elbows on the desktop, hands steepled in front of him. “I’ve forbidden Peyton to change you if you don’t agree.”

“I know. I was getting cold feet, Nate, but something Zoe told Bess the other day changed my mind. Even so, I don’t want to get stuck halfway.” She bowed her head for a moment, then looked into his eyes. “Is there some way you can prevent it?”

“Lycos can. Are you comfortable with Lycos attending the ceremony?”

Blowing out a shaky breath, Gloria nodded. “If it means I don’t have to worry about that, I am.”

“Okay. I’ll shift during the ceremony and control the change after the bite, so you don’t have to worry about it.
